Watching a documentary about Belgium

Our teacher Anna suggested that I uploaded the composition I made for school about a documentary which explained the political and economical situation of Belgium.
Here it is:

The documentary Això no funciona, o potser sí? (This does not work, or maybe it does?), broadcasted on February 2012 by the Catalan public television, TV3, and directed by M. Dolors Genovès aims to show its audience different points of view about the political-economical situation of Belgium and how can it be compared to Catalonia’s own case.

This documental explains how the state of Belgium is organized. In present days it is divided into three federal states which are Wallonia, Flanders and the metropolitan area of the capital, Brussels. People of different cultures live in the country. The Walloons, the Flemish and the German-speaking minority plus the many immigrants of outside Belgium (as much as 50% of the population) inhabit there.
Because of their differences in language and culture, Flemish (the majority) and Walloons have had many discrepancies, some of which worryingly violent.
Some regions have more economical problems than others. After the people of Wallonia lost their Walloon culture in favor of the French, their industry developed but in 1960 they lost a lot of money and the factories had to close. One of the reasons was the independence of Congo, which had been given to the king of the Belgians during the division of Africa into colonies. Since then, the richest part of Belgium has been Flanders, the federal state which offers more facilities and subsidies in studies, medicine, lack of employment, maternity or old age. Many Flemish people want to change the present situation in order to organize more of their own government and infrastructures themselves.  Others claim that they should completely part from Belgium and be an independent state instead.
The German-speaking people affirm that they are the only ones who feel Belgians. They are a very catholic and monarchy-supportive community and they aim for the right to have a federal state such as the other two cultures of Belgium, which both have a federal state of their own and share the metropolitan area of Brussels.

Això no funciona, o potser sí?, mentions a really curious happening which illustrates perfectly that the Walloons disregard the Flemish (also vice versa). What happened was that the Walloon TV broadcasted a fake news program where they announced that Flanders had declared its independence and they did not belong to Belgium anymore. People believed the story and felt really worried about it, that part of the country fell into chaos for two days. But, if they had only turn on their TVs to check the Flemish channel they would have realized that they had been fooled. This fact was really surprising for me and I believe Belgians made some meditation about it even though the situation is still quite the same, as the documentary shows.

About the documentary, I have to say it has some interesting points, as I have explained above but I think it is too long for the information it gives. It is very difficult to pay attention from start to end.
In conclusion, I would recommend watching a selection of scenes from Això no funciona, o potser sí? if you are interested in the topic.

EXCHANGE BELGIUM-CATALONIA: Monday

Monday

Yesterday morning we left to visit Barcelona. We walked a lot and saw a lot of beautiful monuments and buildings. At 14 PM we could choose a place to eat, of course we chose a place in the sun. After we ate we could do some shopping. At 16 PM we went to Terrassa again. We went with the majority of the group to a terrace. I took a delicious croissant with chocolate and we laughed a lot! Once we were ready we went shopping until very late. We were very tired and went home to eat. The dinner was very tasty and afterwards we went straight to bed because we were so tired.

Missing it already....

Hi everyone,
I'm about to share my favourite moments of this little trip to Terrassa, read on!

First of all I'd like to tell you that I really loved my host family, I've never met people who had travelled that much and had stories about all the different countries they visited. Secondly, Angel, Aleix's dad, is an amazing cook, which meant we ate heavenly food every single day. Clearly, the Catalan food was one of the highlights of this trip. Thirdly, Aleix's mother is an English teacher, which made it easy to talk to her, she's a really nice person and I'm sure I'll miss her. Last but not least, Aleix, I guess we we're very lucky with having you, you're such a nice guy, it was really fun staying with you and thank you for everything.

Here comes the part where I talk about the beauty of Barcelona and Terrassa. Obviously we visited the breathtaking works of Gaudi. Not only did they leave me speechless, they also made me feel so small and like I haven't achieved anything in my life (which I haven't but you get what I'm trying to say, I hope).

Here's to the weather in Terrassa: 20 DEGREES, A LOT OF SUN,... Oh, dear students who went to London: MY LEGS ARE TANNED hihi, now I'm going to leave you and look back with a smile and be a little bitter because of the shitty weather here in Belgium.

Goodbye,
Flo xxxxxxxxx

After that we admired a beautiful view of Barcelona from the top of a shopping center. We also walked to the sea, wich was very blue in contrast to the sea in Belgium.

The place that we prefered was the old market with a lot of healthy things like fruit and vegetables. There was color everywhere. Everybody tasted some awesome and really tasteful smoothies! I think that everybody can agree that is tasted like heaven

When we came back to Terrassa we went to drink a hot chocolate and do some shopping.
All in all it was again a great day!

My first 2 days at Terrasa!

Goodmorning everyone,

as the most of you know, I arrived at Sunday. I guess I missed the best part here
(the weekend ;-)). But I liked it very much yesterday. We went to Barcelona with the train. We visited things and we shopped a lot. The weather in Barcelona was not as nice as I thought it would be. The wind was very cold.

Today, we are going to Barcelona once more. We are visiting more things, but there is one eyecatcher: LA SAGRADA FAMILIA!

Barcelonaaa!

Hellooo!
Yesterday we went to Barcelona and had a great time! We went by train. First we visited the buildings and than we had free time, so we went shopping ofcourse. We bought a lot of clothes, because it's much cheaper        here than in Belgium.
In the morning it was a little bit cold, but than in the afternoon the weather was very good.
greets,
Celine

BARCELONAAAA!:-)

Goodmorning everybody!

Yesterday, we went to Barcelona and it was really fun! We went by train. It's funny because the train here looks like the metro in Brussels. When we arrived, we started to visit the old city of Barcelona. We saw cathedrals and they were very beautiful.

The sun was shining and the weather was sweet. We wore sunglasses. There was also time to do some shopping! There are a lot of little streets in Barcelona with nice shops.

Tuesday we're going to visit the new part of Barcelona, I'm really excited about it!

Barçelona ♥

Since this was my first time in Barçelona, I had no idea what to expect. I was amazed by the beauty of the art and impressed by the astonishing buildings. A guide lead us through Barçelona and showed us the prettiest spots in Barçelona. I´m really looking forward to today, since we´ll be visiting La Sagrada Familia and other constructions from Gaudi.
Bye,
Flo

PS: I miss my family and friends in Belgium especially my little brother xxxxx

Goooooooodnight!!

Hellooo!!! As there aren't any photos of the weekend I made a collage to post some of them! Most are taken on Barcelona, where we went on Saturday! We may look a bit tired because we stayed all day walking! The other ones are taken in the aquarium on Sunday. We saw so many ugly fishes and we saw Gemma as well (poor Gemma, she thinks she is Nemo...) and Joëlle thinks she is a very very beautiful yellow fish (poor Joëlle too...) they are happy thinking that.
Now we are going to sleep as we are very tired and the bed is screaming to us...It misses us so much because we have to leave it very early (which we hate)
So, goodnight everybody and see you tomorrow!!!

Picnic Jazz!

One of the most important moments in Terrassa in the year is the Music Festival of Jazz! Last Sunday 17th of March we went to Vallparadis to see one of the concerts. The concert was crowded but we took a sit on the grass and we had a very nice time!

Magic night in Camp Nou!

Last Sunday, we went to Camp Nou to see the match between Barça and Rayo. Our team ( BARÇA) finally won the match 3-1. Catalan students showed them what they had to do during the match, for example in the minute 17, when all the stadium shouted at the same time “ Independencia” or who is the best player of the world. As you can see in the image we took a photo with the shirt of the best player, Lionel Messi.

Fin de semana

Friday

After a long time waiting we finally arrived in Spain. Our Spanish students were waiting for us at the airport with a banner to make us feel home. The first evening was really awesome, we directly went to a disco (BORA BORA) after having dinner. It was the best party ever and different of ours.

Saturday

Saturday morning we could relax and get to know our host family a bit better. At midday we left to do some shopping in Barcelona. We walked a lot and bought a lot of clothes and everyone was in a good mood and we had a lot of fun. We took a lot of pictures of this beautiful city. We were all very tired and went home at 21 PM. We had a delicious dinner and we felt comfortable just like we were home.
Thank you, Esther for this awesome trip and this is only the beginning of a great week!

Sunday

We woke up at 9 AM because we had planned to visit the Montserat, it was really impressive! We had the chance to hear the unique voices of the little boys, they are the only one in the world to travel around the world and not everyone has the chance to see them with their own eyes. In the afternoon we went to a Jazz festival in the parc of Terrassa. In the evening I went with Alyssa and our Spanish students to see the football match of Barcelona: BARCA! It was a great opportunity to see the footballplayers in real. They won 3-1!!!
I just want to thank Carla for this amazing weekend!

The next day we did some shopping. The shops are cheaper than in Belgium, I bought a jacket who was 120 euro in Belgium and here I bought him for 20! So nice! After the shopping, we whent to a bar and there was a live reggae band. I loved it!

On Sunday we went to a Jazz festival in the park of Terassa. There was a girl who played very well trumpet and there were little markets.

I already had a great weekend and I'm looking forward at the rest of the week!

the way to Spain And weekend in Spain

We departed from Zaventem directly from school and we took the airplane at 18u40 in belgium.
We arrived in Barcelona at 20u30 and by the time that we had our lugage, our host family was already waiting on us. We had a warm welcome in Barcelona by the Catalans. After our arrive at the airport, everybody went his own way with his host family. Arrived at our houses, we ate each or dinner and then we went all together to a bar and at 12 o'clock we went to a discotheque named bora bora.

It was a long night but it was really fun ! There were a lot of hot boys !

The next day, saturday, Olivia woke up very late and went to Barcelona with the train and there she met Kimberly, Alyssa and Shanna. When we were in Barcelona itself she met Laura and Ellen and everyone together we went shopping. Arround 6 o'clock joelle and chiara joined us for shopping. We ate something in the shoppingstreet. After they eat something they all took the train back to their homes.

Sophie woke up at 10 o'clock and went to the other house of her catalan girl in Manresa. We went to ride on the quad and it was a great experience ! After this we ate bbq and we visited some family of her catalan girl. Then we went back to her appartment and at 5 O'clock the catalan girl of Chiara came to pick me up by Gloria, to go to the concert of Justin Bieber. I really enjoyed the concert, I had an amazing time.
After it a lot of us went to a bar and the other part stayed at their guest house because they were tired of the day.

WEEKEND

Helllooo!

This was the weekend in Terrassa!!

Saturday, we went to Barcelona with the train. We first went to the amazing football stadion of Barca. I bought some souvenirs in the fan shop. We had lunch next to the stadion. Than we took the metro to the centre of Barcelona. Others were there too and we shopped all together close to the famous Ramblas.
All that walking was exhausting, so we came home to have diner and go to sleep.

Sunday, Laia and me went to watch a game of basketball of her sister. It was a nice game and she won!!
In the afternoon, I met a lot of family of Laia. It was the birthday party of her sister. We ate homemade paella, it was delicious!

Ready to visit Barcelona during the week!!

OUR WEEKEND @ TERRASSA

Hi everybody!

We're monday and we had an incredible weekend here in Terrassa!

After our arrival at the airport of Barcelona, we went party with all the Belgian and Catalan students. The 'BORA BORA' is the place to be for the Spanish youth, but Belgians liked it too! Thank you Bora Bora, and the Catalan students ofcourse, for the first amazing night!

Saturday Aleix invited us to have a barbecue at his place. I learned to eat traditional dishes and I liked it a lot! Then we went out shopping in Terrassa. The stores are very beautiful here.
In the evening we went to a pub. There was a little concert. Many people danced. We couldn't hold us to danced with them! It was again a very nice night!

Greets,
Justine

Weekend in Spain

Saturday morning I watched Maria-Clotilde training children for football. Afterwards I ate barbecue with her parents, her brother, her grandparents and her uncle. Undoubtedly, the food was very well. Next, with Gloria we joined Joëlle, Gemma, Giovanna and Arianna to go to Barcelona to shop. Once arrived in Barcelona we met the others of the group.  Gloria and I ate at Gemma's house with Joëlle. It was the first time I ate Spanish tortilla! Finally, we met Sophie and Maria-Clotilde in a restaurant in Terrassa, and together we went to a pub with the others, where we played kicker football. It was a bit difficult for us to play (and to win) because the football table was very different from the ones we have in Belgium. I conclusion it was a heavy but very nice day.

Chiara and Joëlle

Bora Bora!

Friday evening, when we arrived to Spain we've gone to a party! At 1 O'clock we were all in the Bora Bora.
The music and the people there were just crazy. Everyone danced, laughed and sung. We were all very happy of that night and we will never forget this Spanish atmosphere. We leaved the club at 3, but some of us stood there until 5 in the morning. The club itself was beautifull, there was a jetski on the roof and another next to the wall. There were three places where we could drink delicious things. At the roof there were also a lot's of plants, like if we were in a jungle. The people over there were crazy at dancing! I'd like to learn to Belgian guys to dance the same as the guys here did.

Loved that night! Thank you for it.

The weekend

Friday

After a tiring flight, we arrived home and had a nice diner. Than we went to a disco, called Bora Bora. It was very different than a disco in Belgium. Everybody danced a lot and ze had a good time. We surely had a great first night.

Saturday

Marta and I were very tired, so we slept till midday. Then we went to aleix, because he gave a barbecue. He doesn't live far from Marta, but we couldn't find it, we were a little bit lost. Luckily Enric saw us from Aleix' terrace and called us. We had a great lunch and a lovely time.
After we did a little siesta, we went shopping. Ofcourse we loved it. It was less expensive then in Belgium.

awesome day!!!!

Sunday I go with Joëlle, Carmina and Gemma to the Aquarium. We saw a lot of funny fish (gemma-fish, fishes with make-up, ...). But when we arrived where the penguins were, Joëlle was so excited that we lost her. after the aquarium we go to a shoppingcenter for watching the boats in the port. After that, we go to a crepperie. We could choose creps with fromage, ham, bacon, egg, ... I never eat it before, but i liked it a lot. The crepperie was near the sea, so after our lunch we went to see the sea. Then was everybody tired and they want to take a siesta.
So we went to our house, take a siesta, and some hours later, we met eachother back in the center of Terrassa. Chiara was also their and we went with everybody to the appartement of gemma's grandparents. In the basement of the apartement, their was a kickertable. So we do some matches, but I was a real disaster! It was time for Chiara and Maria to go home, so we say goodbye and go with Gemma and Joëlle to a restaurant, watching Barça. And Barça Wins!!!!!! after the match, we go home and put our pyjamas on for going to sleep...

x Kimberly

LAST FRIDAY NIGHT!

After a warm welcome at the airport, we drove home.
We had diner with Laura, Giovanna, Arianna, and Esther. Then we dressed up all together. As we arived at the BORA BORA , we saw the others. The music was very good and we danced a lot. We had so much fun , it was nice to see how Spanish people go out. The Spanish girls dress up in another way than we do when we go out. We danced until  3 a.m. , we were happy to finally go to sleep.

Thank youuu for this awesome night!

Ellen

3-1 for Barça!

Sunday evening we went with Carlos, Shanna and Carla to see the football match of Barça. From outside the stadium we heard the screams of the thousands of fans waiting for the match to begin. When we walked in the stadium I thought we were walking in a game of FIFA, it was an incredible feeling! It was the first football match that I saw in live and it was an amazing one, it looked so much better than on TV. Finally Barça won 3-1 against the other team and to be honest Messi was the best player of them all!

I will never forget this evening so gracias Carlos!
